alstom Castaic

Sierra Commercial Plumbing, Inc. was selected by Alstom to design and build the cooling water system for the LADWP Castaic Hydro rehabilitation unit 7 located in Castaic, approximately 35 miles north of Los Angeles. Sierra employed over 30 workers, detailers, fitters and welders. Sierra also sub contracted pipe cleaning, pipe lining, sand blasting and radiographic testing.  The generator is a hooped pelton runner patented by Alstom. The cooling system cools the generator and the three main shaft bearings. The system starts at 900 PSI and steps down for the cooling system. Sierra also installed specialty hydraulic systems designed by Alstom. One of the systems was the braking jets built in Canada and shipped to the site. Sierra rigged the system and installed it 40’ above grade in the turbine shaft. Sierra installed the hydraulic oiling system and compressed air piping for controls.

EL ENCANTO, SANTA BARBARA

Nestled in the hills of Santa Barbara, we are proud to have been the commercial plumbing contractor for the $60 million dollar renovation of the historic El Encanto Hotel and Villas.  Sierra Commercial Plumbing, Inc., completed the plumbing in June of 2013.  The renovation of this five star Orient Express Property consisted of an extensive remodel of existing villas and construction of new buildings.  In total, Sierra worked on thirty-four guest buildings.  Being the luxury boutique hotel that El Encanto is, no two rooms were built the same and we installed a large variety of high end plumbing fixtures in each building.  The project was built on a sloping site and every building was built to its own unique elevation.  Seven buildings were constructed on top of concrete parking structures.  One of the parking structures incorporated a utility space between the guest buildings and structure.  The domestic water system is a complex recirculation system with heat trace.  Over twenty one miles of small bore piping was installed in the guest rooms.

We had the privilege of working with Bernards and over 25 other subcontractors on bringing this project to a successful conclusion.

SANTA MONICA UCLA MEDICAL

We are proud to have been the commercial plumbing contractor for this outpatient services building on 16th Street, Santa Monica.  As the design assist contractor for the medical systems, Sierra fully outfitted several operating rooms, recover rooms, and test labs with medical air, vacuum, oxygen, and nitrous oxide.  This building has its own plant for the medical gases.  The project included a fuel oil system that fed a roof top generator.

Sierra also was the design build contractor of the steam system.  Piping was installed from St. John’s Hospital, which was the source of the steam, under 16th Street that fed into project.  The system fed equipment throughout the building with four different pressures, including heating hot water heat exchangers, domestic hot water, sterilizers for operating rooms, and large scale cart sterilizers.  Steam condensate was then returned by pumps to the hospital.

The project was also challenging due to the inclusion of one of the first automated parking systems in LA under the first floor,  which required that the piping be run around the parking elevators.

We had the privilege of working with Nautilus Group, Inc., on this project which was recently honored the AIA National Healthcare Design Award.
